BOOK of the MONTH
Material Change: Design Thinking and the Social Entrepreneurship Movement
by Eve Blossom
Material Change shows that there is something going on in design-something powerful. Design can change the world. This new way of thinking is revolutionizing the business of design and the design of business. Material Change is the story of trained architect and entrepreneur Eve Blossom, who built her design business, Lulan Artisans, on a framework of ecological, economic, social, communal and cultural sustainability.

NorCal ADPSR Presents:
European Passive House in the California Context
Okay kWh/SF-YR number crunchers, get ready for European Passive House translated to California shores. The O’Niell Residence, certified in 2010 as California’s First Passive House, features triple glazed windows, R74 roof and R-31 wall insulation, and a Mitsubishi Mr. Slim heat pump backup system in Sonoma. Is this way over the top for coastal California, or an entire new standard for home construction that will soon be taking California’s 16 climate zones by storm? European Passive House is not only gaining traction, it’s almost universally adopted by all European countries as a standard for what is ‘nearly zero energy’ home construction.
Speakers:
* Nabih Tahan, AIA, is an architect based in Berkeley, CA, and Austria, and a founding board member of Passive House CA. After several years living in Austria, Nabih returned to California in 2005 to introduce the Passive House Standard to California in the renovation of his home. As a consultant to the Austrian Trade Commission, Mr. Tahan authored a study describing the opportunities for Austrian companies to introduce their products and systems to the US green building industry. Mr. Tahan has now joined the general contracting firm, CREE Byrhomberg, that specializes in a timber based “system approach” method to designing and building office buildings, schools and residential projects in North America.
* Bronwyn Barry is Director of One Sky Homes, a Silicon Valley Net Zero Energy Home Builder. She is a Certified Passive House Consultant, an Associate AIA member, and serves as the Co-Chair and a founding board member of Passive House California. She will be one of the featured speakers at the International Passive House Conference in 2012, Hannover, Germany.

The Forums are the can't-miss event for sustainability professionals, and the reasons why are simple: You'll learn about the latest trends from thought-provoking speakers, make new connections with peers and suppliers, and bring back innovative, actionable ideas you can apply in your own organization. Cocktail Party for Global Fund for Women
Come join us for a festive cocktail party to benefit the Global Fund for Women. A group of GFW admirers in the design industry have come together to host an event at the Levi Plaza offices of Suzman Design Associates. GFW has captured our hearts with their brilliant approach to providing grants worldwide, to groups small and large for projects that empower women through education, economic opportunity, and legal advocacy. Their special appeal is that they are relatively informal about the format of the grant requests that they receive, which opens the door to less sophisticated groups who may request funds for modest but important purposes.
We invite you to participate in the fun. There will be live chamber music, cocktails as well as non-alcoholic drinks and hors d'oeuvres. Global Fund for Women CEO, Dr. Musimbi Kanyoro will be in attendance to talk to us about her extraordinary organization.
